The 81-year-old actor made a rare family appearance, delivered a daring political statement, and reflected on a festival he considered \u201chome\u201d in the midst of global conflict as he returned to the Cannes spotlight with more than just acclaim in tow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the 78th Festival of Cannes\u2019 opening ceremony on May 13, 2025, renowned American actor, filmmaker, and producer Robert of Niro was presented with an\u00a0honorary Palme d\u2019Or\u00a0for lifetime accomplishment.<\/p>\n

\u201cTitanic\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0star Leonardo DiCaprio gave the prize to the actor. Fourteen years have passed since Robert presided over the jury at the esteemed film festival in 2011.<\/p>\n

Robert\u00a0discussed\u00a0U.S. political trends in his acceptance speech, mentioning President Donald Trump in particular.<\/p>\n

He started off by saying,\u00a0\u201cIn my country, we are fighting like [expletive] for the democracy we once took for granted.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>He said,\u00a0\u201cThat affects all of us here because the arts are democratic.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The link between democratic values and the arts was highlighted by Robert, who said,\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s why we are a threat to autocrats and fascists.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He went on to discuss the recent nomination and policy plans of the U.S. President. Robert remarked,\u00a0\u201cAmerica\u2019s philistine president has had himself appointed head of one of our premier cultural institutions,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0alluding to the appointment of the president as chair of the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts himself.<\/p>\n

The former\u00a0\u201cGoodfellas\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>star also took issue with the 47th president of the United States\u2019 announcement of new tariffs, saying,\u00a0\u201cHe has cut funding and support to the arts, humanities, and education, and now he has announced a 100 per cent tariff on films that are produced outside the US.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLet that sink in for a minute,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said to the audience after a lengthy silence.<\/p>\n

Calling the situation unacceptable, Robert urged action beyond American borders.\u00a0\u201cAll these attacks are unacceptable. And this isn\u2019t just an American problem, it\u2019s a global one,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>he said.<\/p>\n

He closed this portion of his speech with a call to action.\u00a0\u201cLike a film, we can\u2019t just all sit back and watch. We have to act, and we have to act now without violence but with great passion and determination. It\u2019s time for anyone who cares about liberty to organise, to protest, and when there are elections, of course, to vote.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

A different person reacted by\u00a0saying,\u00a0\u201cThis guy is insane Out of touch completely [sic],\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0while someone else noted,\u00a0\u201cSo disrespectful [sic].\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0There were also supportive remarks, including,\u00a0\u201cVery well spoken by Mr DeNiro. We need to take this seriously and fight back.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0However, criticism continued with another stating,\u00a0\u201cHe is a joke.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
